SURFACE MATTERS
With plenty of
storage in the closet,
there was no need
for a desk with clunky
drawers. John chose
this writing desk,
left,
because it has a
simple frame and can
double as a dressing
table when the room
is used for guests. “It
doesn’t resemble
office furniture, yet it
performs that
function,” he says.
PATTERN POWER
John added
personality by
covering one wall
with patterned
wallpaper,

“Because the pattern
is on a white
background, it
doesn’t feel over-
powering,” he says.
FIND A FOCUS
“Even small rooms need a
focal point,” John says.
This large-scale bulletin

draws
attention. John mounted
cork squares to the wall,
covered them with grass
cloth, and attached
molding around the
edges to frame it.
